Project Abstract

Music is all around us. You can hear smooth jazz on the radio, the newest pop song on iTunes, or even an electronic beat in the background of a TV commercial, but how did all this content originate? More importantly, how does one now make high quality music in the new millenium? These are questions that many artists, with a growing opportunity to create and post music on sound-sharing websites and streaming services online, are currently asking themselves, and what I have sought to find out for myself. The purpose of this project is to explore how aspects such as technology and instrumentation have affected the process of modern music-making, and learn more about how music is created in a professional setting. I am doing this by observing the methods and tools used in a recording studio environment, both digital and traditional, and then attempting to apply what I learn to the creation of my own music. I am working with producer and sound engineer Daniel Naiman for my internship. He works with professional artists at his home studio, assists in recording studio tracks and live performances, has years of experience creating and mastering tracks, and knows a great deal about the music business. With the help of his knowledge and experience, I can hopefully gain a better understanding of how tracks are brought from start to finish and go on to make my own “songs from scratch.”
